Ember loves our food

Thank You to Led Astray for this lovely article.

Last month we decided to change Ember from her puppy food over to adult food. I chose 4 brands which I was interested to try and got samples for each one. I did a lot of research about each product and after trying the foods, we decided Guru was the one for us. I hadn’t heard a lot about Guru, but I had seen a bit of hype on social media so I was interested to try it out.

The food looks a lot like the pony nuts my sister feeds her horse, which Ember loves, and the pellets don’t feel greasy or crumbly like some we have tried.

What interested me the most was the unique method Guru use to make their food. It’s called cold pressing and it allows the food to retain a lot of the nutrients important for dogs diets. ‘Guru dog food is as close to a dog’s natural diet as you can get!’. There are no additives or preservatives and the healthy diet is provides can help freshen breath, improve skin and improve behaviour.

Guru also have a handy feeding guide on their website which tells you how much food your dog should be eating a day, based on their weight and you receive a measuring cup with your first order. There is also a video showing you how you can mix water with the food too.

Ember loves this food. During the initial switch over period, she always ate the Guru biscuits over her others and after her first full Guru meal she went back over to her bowl once finished to ask for more. As a food obsessed dog it’s important for us that she is fed the best diet possible and remains fuller for longer and with Guru this definitely seems to be the case. The size of the food is perfect too, as Ember has a slow feeder bowl, some of the biscuits need more work to become free than over. This means she is not eating as fast and is improving her mental stimulation to get all the food out.

We have started to see some improvements in Ember’s behaviour and we have also been able to maintain her current healthy weight and soft coat.

The flavour – surf and turf is great too and the packaging clearly states the ingredients and the amounts of each, along with the benefits they have. Pricing is decent as well, due to the fact that you don’t need to use as much food as normal kibble. £24 for a 5kg bag and £48 for a 14kg bag means that we are spending £1.03 a day on Ember who is 25kg. Not bad when you consider all the nutrition she is getting.

Guru also have field trip and road trip bones which can be used as a tasty, healthy treat or a complete meal for on the go, which we will certainly be purchasing for the summer adventures we are planning.

Customer service is also fast and helpful and Lisa is so friendly! So if you’re looking for a new food or like us are changing from puppy to adult food, Guru seems like the perfect option.

A Postcard From…

Tuna

When my hubster and I embarked on the Guru dream, little did I know just how much Social Media would impact on my life.

I knew nothing about social media, so last October it was full steam ahead with a crash course on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Even though it was all very overwhelming I quickly became hooked. It was amazing to see so many fabulous pics of dogs of every breed, shape and size doing their thing. I was in my element! What I particularly noticed was the thought behind each image, they captured a special time and place, marked by their picturesque settings.

It became my mission to celebrate these stunning photos and it all began with Tuna the Long Dog on Instagram. Tuna (aka Luna) is unofficially London’s longest sausage dog. When I started to follow her last December, she didn’t have too many followers but I could see that Eline (the ‘hooman’ behind Tuna) had an eye for detail. So, what better place to start our Postcard from series… than in our capital city with its iconic buildings and landmarks. Tuna posted photos from buildings such as the Houses of Parliament to iconic landmarks like the instantly recognisable red telephone box. @tunathelongdog now has over 13K followers!

Tuna

The series quickly took off, as more and more of our customers and followers began to send in their own images celebrating the beauty of Great Britain, Europe and beyond. From Fitch on the beach in Wales, Digby and Friends on the Yorkshire Moors to Ruggine in Rome, Italy and not forgetting Junior in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Postcards

Absolutely stunning photos with dogs of all breeds, shapes and sizes that just make our hearts melt. So thanks to everyone who has sent us some fantastic images.

If you would like to be featured, why don’t you send us your favourite image? All we need to know is where you took the photo and what social medium you use, we’ll do the rest!

C’mon everybody spread the love with us xx

Tried & Tested

We asked the awesome Alfie Bear to try our Surf & Turf Cold-Pressed Dog Food. You can read the full review on their website here, and below…

“I don’t know if you have seen but there is a real hype about Guru Pet Foods on social media at the moment, I had heard so many positive feedback that when they asked me if I wanted to try a sample of their “Surf & Turf” I just couldn’t say no!”

So, what makes Guru so special?
Guru use a unique method to prepare their food, using only the finest ingredients they are ground and then gently mixed together preserving the nutrients before they are cold pressed at a low temperature of 44 degrees for just a few seconds.

On first impression it actually reminded me of pony nuts, I was a little sceptical to see if Alf would eat it (He’s a fussy pooch, he’d rather starve than eat something he doesn’t want).. But i was surprised when he came rushing into the kitchen – He definitely smelt it! Then devoured the little sample I put out for him. “Surf & Turf” can be eaten wet or dry, adding warm water turns it into a lovely paste, Alfie loved it! I highly recommend watching their “How to mix with water” video.

Please remember when introducing your dog to a new dog food it is important to introduce it slowly over two weeks, slowly increasing the amount of the new food while gradually decreasing their current food.. This is so important for your dogs digestive system, the last thing we want is a upset tummy.

Alfie

They were also kind enough to send Alfie one of their “Road Trip Bones”, these can be used as a tasty treat or a complete meal on the go.. Perfect for those adventurous pooches! I think they may a great thing for me to pop in my handbag, just in case he fancies a little snack!

Are you tempted to take the plunge? I know i certainly am! Their food ticks all the boxes, it seems silly not to give it a go.

Dog food fit for humans proves a hit with pet lovers

Please click here to read this article on The Daily Telegraph website.

A new kind of dog food has become a surprise hit with pet lovers around the world, helping its inventors to hit a forecast revenue of nearly £500,000 in their first year in business.

Guru, which is based in Appley Bridge, Lancashire, has created a new kind of “cold pressed” dog food, a cooking method that is believed to retain as many nutrients as possible.

Dog lovers Andrew and Lisa Clarke developed the recipe for their “surf and turf” product when cooking meals at home for their own dogs.

“We’re home feeders,” said Mr Clarke. “We have always cooked our own meat and fish and vegetables for the dogs, but it is time consuming. We knew that other dog owners must have the same problem, so we looked into making a product that was as good as homemade.”

The business launched in September last year with the dry dog food in two sizes, as well as a travel bone, and the founders invested £150,000 on bringing the products to market.

The food is aimed at any breed of dog, from weaning to old age.

Some 24pc of UK households own a dog and the UK’s dog food market is currently worth £2bn. The Guru founders hope to tap into a growing trend for the humanisation of pet food.

Health-conscious Brits are now putting their pets on all-natural, nutrient-rich diets to mirror the healthy foods they feed their families, with rivals such as Pooch & Mutt posting significant growth in sales of its hand-baked, all-natural dog products. One million Pooch & Mutt treats are now fed to dogs every week.

“Surf and turf is my favourite meal at a restaurant,” said Mrs Clarke. “I wanted to make a nutritious dog food with a recipe that owners would feel that they recognised and would like to eat themselves.”

The Guru dog food was rated as a 4.9 out of five stars by All About Dogs, a popular pet owner website, which receives 70,000 visitors from 130 countries every month.

This has prompted export enquiries from Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia. The company is in early negotiations with Pets Corner, which owns 100 stores in the UK, which could be the brand’s first nationwide listing.

The Guru dog food is cooked at a 44 degrees in a short burst of heat, while extruded foods are cooked at up to 200 degrees.

The dog food is manufactured at a factory on the Continent – one of just two in Europe that can make cold-pressed food in this way.

The start-up turned over £220,000 within its first six months trading through sales on its website and local independent shops, but the Clarkes hope that an upcoming partnership with social media star @bellalovesbeau, of “Dogs of Instagram” fame, will help to drive up sales over the coming months. “Sales were strong even over the Christmas and New Year period so I’m very confident moving into 2016,” Mr Clarke said.

It was Tuesday the 1st of December when we decided to reach out and send Bella Loves Beau an email. Let me take you back to late November….

Guru had just started to post images on Instagram.  As soon as we noticed the Bella loves Beau posts, we immediately started to follow them and became hooked. We soon began a friendship…

So let’s give you an insight into the Instagram stars Bella, Beau and Alexandra.

Bella & Beau are two adorable French bulldogs and live in Athens, Greece.   Bella came into Alexandra’s life first and then came Beau. Both quite obviously mean the world to her.  She describes them as her ‘everything’.  Bella and Beau appear unaffected by their worldwide fame and take it all in their stride.  Every picture they appear in seems effortless and their love seems to resonate through the lens of the camera.

Each picture is adorned by a special inspirational quote helping motivate and bring positivity to her devoted fans. To date, they have garnered over 90,000 dedicated Instagram followers and rising.

So who is Alexandra?  All I can say is she’s an amazing person, with an infectious work ethic and a positive attitude to life. The quote ‘we don’t meet people by accident, they are meant to cross our path for a reason’ is definitely true for Alexandra and myself. I’m so blessed for our paths to have crossed.

So what’s next? It’s been a pleasure collaborating with Bella loves Beau and over the next 12 months we will be sharing our pictures, quotes, inspirational messages and running competitions on all platforms of social media. So please get involved!

Guru to the Rescue!

Guru to the rescue

As you all know, we at Guru love our dogs to pieces and the more emails, photos and videos we receive from our Guru fans, the better!

Now, I’d like to tell you about one little fella called Rossi. Around 5pm one evening in October, I received a call from a pet parent who said her name was Gill. She was concerned that her 7 week old cocker pup, Rossi wasn’t eating. She’d picked him up from the breeder 3 days before full of excitement; however she was becoming extremely concerned that Rossi wasn’t eating full meals and was only picking at his food. After speaking with Gill it became apparent that Rossi needed some nourishment quickly. We know that dogs are social animals and although many puppies accept their new environment quickly and with little fuss, some take longer than others. Was it a case that he was missing his mother and littermates or did he just not like the food he was being offered?

The same evening, I drove to Gill’s house with half a bag of Guru Surf & Turf. When I first set eyes on the little fella he was a tiny ball of black fur. I offered him a small bite of Guru and his nose literally began to twitch. I took the bag of food into the kitchen and was followed by Rossi eagerly wagging his tail. After weighing him and measuring out the correct amount of food, we placed his bowl on the floor. Within no time, Rossi was tucking into his Guru and it was obvious that he was just very hungry. He ate every last bite, licked his bowl then took himself off to his crate for a sleep. My job was done. I stayed a while to chat with Gill to explain all about cold pressed food, including how it’s made, the ingredients and benefits.

I’ve stayed in touch with Gill ever since and I personally deliver Rossi’s food order, just so that I can see him! He’s growing fast, he has a beautiful shiny coat, his breath doesn’t smell and I’m told his poos are solid every time – way to go Rossi!

Kibble v’s Cold Pressed – What’s the Difference?

Guru Pet Food

Hello and welcome to our first Blog. We want this section to be both topical and fun so we aim to post articles that create debate as well as looking at the lighter side of having a furry companion or two.

We thought we’d start with probably the most important subject for you and your dog, Food. So we’ve called this blog “Kibble v’s Cold Pressed – What’s the Difference?”

Any owner searching for the best way to feed their dog will tell you how difficult it is to find the right food. Finding the right food is important when you consider that what you feed your dog directly affects their health, coat, temperament and lifespan.

The majority of brands make claim to sell the best food offering high meat content, fresh fish, more vegetables and the list goes on. Although the choice of foods have become broader over the last few years, the one overwhelming factor is that most dried dog food (kibble) is manufactured using a process called extrusion.

In the mid 1950’s a well-known pet food company adapted a cereal manufacturing process to make dry dog food. The process was so successful that by the mid 1960’s a lobbying group working for the American pet industry started a campaign to stop people feeding their dog anything but packaged dog food. Even now, over 50 years later, many pet owners have only ever fed their dog dry, extruded kibble. The quality of the ingredients may have changed for the better, but the cooking process is much the same.

How does extrusion work?
Extrusion works by pushing ingredients through a tube and cooking them at high temperatures and pressures. Once cooked, the food is then coated in fats and oils before being packaged. It’s a quick and inexpensive process, but many dog nutritionists believe that the high temperatures and pressure can cause the food to lose vital vitamins and proteins. In any case, check out ‘The Revolution’ page on our website and see how extruded kibble reacts in water!

So what’s the alternative?
Here at Guru, we produce Cold Pressed food for your dog. Cold pressing is a method of producing complete dog food at very low temperatures. The ingredients are ground then gently mixed together. This carefully preserves the nutrients before they are Cold Pressed at a low temperature of 44 degrees for just a few seconds.

This unique cooking method means that Guru retains much more of the ingredients’ nutrients.

But don’t just take our word for it; check out the highly regarded review website ‘All about dog food’. It says “Cold-pressing is arguably the best way to prepare a dry pet food as it means the food isn’t exposed to the potentially damaging high temperatures normally associated with dry pet food production and should, therefore, leave the food with much more of its natural nutrients”.
